Despite being a territory of the United States, Puerto Rico maintains a distinct culture, economic structure, and political system. This makes it both similar to and unique from the mainland.

In comparison, the US, as one of the world’s leading economies and most diverse societies, provides an intriguing contrast point for these comparisons.

A Detailed Comparison: Puerto Rico and The United States

When I contemplate about the relationship between Puerto Rico and the mainland United States, I find myself engrossed in a fascinating conversation. At first glance, it’s a story of an island territory juxtaposed with its giant mainland counterpart—the United States. But as you delve deeper, a more nuanced tale unfolds, highlighting important similarities, key differences, intriguing cultural differences and much more.

The Real Estate: Size Matters, But So Does Diversity!

You see, Puerto Rico could be compared to David standing against Goliath in terms of land area.

With its modest size—approximately 9,104 square kilometers or 3,515 square miles—it’s around 107913% smaller than the expansive United States that spans approximately 9,833,517 sq km! In any case, when exploring individual states’ comparison within this vast US landscape – you might be surprised. It’s roughly equivalent to Connecticut and trumps over both Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

A Glance at Demographics And Economy: Striking Differences Are Apparent!

Now that I think about it, the demographic and economic dynamics present another facet to this dialogue.

All things considered; while Puerto Rico saw a slight population decrease from 2019 to 2020 (from approximately 3.32M to around 3.26M), it registered an upswing in median household income during this period – an interesting phenomenon indeed!

Furthermore,

Puerto Rico compared to US

-cost of living scenario presents yet another contrast: generally speaking living in Puerto Rico is more pocket-friendly compared to the US mainland. Consumer prices in the United States (excluding rent) are approximately 11% higher, and overall cost of living is around a quarter more expensive.

American Citizenship, Yet Limited Representation: A Unique Political Paradox

As I observe Puerto Rico’s relations with the United States, I can’t help but note a distinctive constitutional paradox. Puerto Ricans have enjoyed U.S citizenship since 1917; however, they lack full political representation at federal level which has triggered an ongoing debate concerning its status within the U.S system.

Contrasting Health And Energy Dynamics: Some Food For Thought!

In terms of energy consumption and health disparities—again some striking contrasts come into view. Notably, despite consuming nearly 70 times more energy than it produces, Puerto Rico’s per capita consumption is just one-third of average consumption across all states.

In addition,

-health scenario reveals more disparities. Specifically, adults in Puerto Rico reporting fair or poor health stood at a considerably high rate of 37.1% – as opposed to Mississippi (the highest amongst all fifty states) with a rate of 25.3%.

An interesting facet is indeed the emigration trend from the island over past decades; today there are more people identifying themselves of “Puerto Rican origin” residing on mainland USA than on the island itself!

When it comes to income and poverty though,Puerto Rico compared to US situation reveals some stark contrasts. With per capita income of $13,345 against $35,977 in mainland US and a disproportionately high poverty rate, socioeconomic disparities are glaringly apparent.
